A barrel of botanicals
At the recent Bibendum tasting we were intrigued to taste a bottle of
Citadelle Reserve Gin, which uses barrel ageing in ex-cognac casks to mellow the gin’s elegant mix of 19 botanicals.
Pale gold in colour, it’s got a refined vanilla character with some subtle toasty spice that cries out for a salty olive on the side.
Citadelle, which recently joined the Bibendum portfolio, is produced at the Pierre Ferrand cognac distillery in France – hence the barrels – and is distilled in a copper pot still. The Reserve is available in limited, vintage-dated quantities and is part of Bibendum’s new premium spirits portfolio, which features seven new spirit brands including Samalens Armagnac, Cognac Pierre Ferrand, Landy Cognac and Plantation rum.
