You are a wine geek if..........
by Mark Deamer
1) In the film SIDEWAYS you found yourself pointing out to your non wine geeky friend the irony of the main protagonists insisting he hated merlot yet his dream wine was 1961 Cheval Blanc. A large constituant of Cheval Blanc's cepage is merlot.
2) that you used the word 'cepage' in your explanation!
3) When watching Sideways you could not understand why no-one else in the cinema found the passage "I thought you hated Chardonnay?". "I like all varietals. I just don't generally like
the way they manipulate Chardonnay in California -- too much oak and secondary malolactic
fermentation." as Hilarious as you did.
4) You found yourself explaining to your non wine geeky friend the complexities of malolactic
fermentation and the largely held view within the wine fraternity about Californian Chardonnay. Merely to point out just why that passage was so hilarious.
5) In WITHNAIL & I when they "demand the finest wines known to humanity!" you offer up five wines that you feel fit the bill.
6) When James Bond orders the finest vintage of Dom Perignon the restaurant has. No matter what vintage is presented you offer up the merits of the vintage but also five other vintages you feel are superior.
7) In SILENCE OF THE LAMBS you questioned the wisdom of pairing Chianti with liver (be it human or not) and fava beans due to the clashing of the Irony characteristics of both liver and sangeovese.
8) When watching Fiddy Cent, P Diddy et al swigging Cristal you can't help mentioning how dissapointed you were the last time you had Cristal. Suggesting better yet cheaper alternatives.
9) You find yourself correcting your non wine geeky friends when they are enjoying a bottle of Lindauer and telling you how much they love champagne. "Errrrrrrrrmmmm it's not actually champagne"
10) You choose your holiday destinations by their locality to vinyards

Request comment removal Permanent link to this commentOk. Cheval Blanc has 57% of it's vineyards is Cab/Franc. However the cepage varies vintage to vintage. Try as I might on Google, I have not found the cepage of the 61 vintage. In a desperate bid to add gravitas to my piece and salvage some comedy value I suggest that it may have been a merlot heavy vintage.
