Considered the world’s leading tequila education programme, the Tahona Society Cocktail Competition’s national heats are set to begin this month.
Founded in 2010, the competition calls on bartenders to ‘join the Mexican revolution’, a response to the cultural movement in Mexico towards a renewed focus on craft, mastery and sustainability.
The brief? To create a cocktail that represents sustainable values, celebrates the flavour of agave and can be paired with a variety of authentic Mexican street food.
Local heats will take place from March until September in a record 28 market. The competition aims to educate bartenders about the quality and provenance of tequila and sustainability.
The winner from each country will be invited to Mexico for a week-long global final in September, taking part in a series of masterclasses and a tours of the area and distillery.
The second and third place winners will also travel to Mexico for the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the country’s ancient tradition of agave spirit production, as well as to guest bartend in one of Mexico City’s leading bars.
