Reyka is challenging UK bartenders with translating the adventurous spirit of Iceland into a cocktail.
‘When it comes to adventure, the Icelanders lead a pretty strong game,’ says Reyka ambassador Fabiano Latham. ‘They’ve been formed by uncontrollable forces of nature and have learned not only to survive, but also to flourish and live life to the max.’
Given Reyka’s deep Icelandic roots, it makes sense that the brand’s new cocktail competition harnesses this same sense of adventure. The Reyka Expedition is seeking out the UK’s best bartenders – those elemental pathfinders who embody the intrepid attitudes of Iceland.
Reyka is taking a novel approach to discovering these cocktail pioneers, and it all starts with two wheels and one daring man.
In August, Latham will set out on a monumental cycling journey spanning 828 miles across the UK – the same distance as Iceland’s famous ring road, Route 1.
On his travels, he will stop in ten cities from Aberdeen to London, hosting heats in which audacious competitors will put their cocktail creativity to the test before a panel of judges. There are five places to be won in total, with a place awarded to each of the UK’s key regions: Scotland, North, Midlands, South and London. The bartender with the highest score in each region will win a trip to Reyka’s home in Iceland, realm of massive glaciers, subterranean volcanoes and, of course, refreshingly clean vodka.
Forging the perfect serve
Reyka is tasking bartenders with an intriguing challenge: to craft a cocktail marrying the crispness of vodka with its classic bedfellow, the tomato.
In Iceland, tomatoes are grown year round through sustainable production methods, using geothermal energy and pure Icelandic spring water – the same resources used to make Reyka vodka, and all the more reason for their pairing.
The winning cocktails will be the ones that perfectly balance the combination of Reyka and tomato – hint: tomato brings out the vodka’s vanilla, aniseed and grapefruit flavours – while expressing the liquid’s inextricable connection to the Nordic island. And no Bloody Marys, please!
