Duffman, needs advice!!

I am the manager of a medium sized bar in Surrey, we are really lively at weekends as you would expect but during the week, things tend to move quite slowly.

A couple of months back we started offering deal's on by-the-glass wine with certain dishes/sharing platters on the menu and it has been taken on really well.

I want to start offering the same sort of thing with bottled beer's but at the moment, our offering is prett limited (Sol, Becks, Peroni) and I wondered if anybody has tasted any beers that would sit well with traditional bar snack's, sharing platters etc. I tried a nice beer last week called Coopers that was really clean and crisp, also I tried a beer in America which I think was called Sierra Nevada pale ale that I really liked and was quite keen to find out a bit more about it, but any advice or tips would be really good!!

Please let me know…

No question that you've got to diversify on that beer selection – a man can't live on Sol and Peroni alone. Not when there are so many great imported beers to choose from.

Maybe give customers a recommendation for certain types of sharing platters – a good mexican beer (not that watery stuff), like Pacifico or even Negro Modelo with Mexican sharing food, for example. There are a number of bars that are doing it right when it comes to beer… best thing is to pay a visit to one of them – it's a good excuse to try a few new beers as well.

I agree with you about Sierra Nevada, and there's more good US craft stuff where that came from. Don't forget your local beers though – there's some good craft stuff happening right here. Definitely worth getting a cask or two of that.

2 words…Meantime Brewery!

Classy & Tasty. Pilsners through to Chocolate Beer to Stout. Check out their website, nip down your local Tescos/Sainsburys and buy a couple of Bottles. Quality beer from London.

Sierra Nevada is a good shout. Alhambra, Coopers Sparkling, Belgian Beers are all worth a look. Plus i've also got to plug my favvy, Sharps Doom Bar from cornwall. Cask or Bottle. Awesome!

Cheers

I would recommend speaking to the guys at Brew Dog… A Scottish micro brewary doing some really exciting things with a great contemporary branding…

They have some core products like Punk IPA and Trashy Blonde as well as limited edititions and designer beers such as Tokyo or the Tacticle Nuclear Penguine…

Good people to deal with as well…

But Coopers is a good shout too… Always popular with the antipodeans and those of us who've fond memories of Oz…
