Sir Mix a Lot 01-02-2010

Hi guys,

I'm looking a really obscure rum, vodka, gin, tequila and whisky to put on my list in a ‘dare to be different’ section. Can anyone recommend any that relatively few people have heard of and that have a good story behind them? Obviously they have to taste good too and be between £20-£25 per bottle. Contact deets would be good too…

Thanks

I heard Mahiki have just brought out a rum, that wouldbe an unusual option. And why don't you try infusing some vodkas to create your own crazy flavours – black truffle could be interesting (but expensive!). Or cardamom – great in cocktails. Yum.

I rather like Kinkynero – odd name but rather a good Aussie Rum.

There was a Geranium gin in the last issue of Imbibe. I haven't tried it myself, but Imbibe said it was:

An artfully executed gin with a soft base note of lychee and rose.

Might suit you? It's £29 a bottle from Coe's (020 8551 4966)

Sir,

This all depends on how obscure you want to go!

When looking for something interesting, I always found half an hour rooting around in the back of Gerry's on Old Compton Street would turn up hidden jewels; eg a rum from the Canary Islands made using honey (the name escapes me – Mr Burrell at Cottons might like to fill in the gap, I think the bottle is still behind his bar!)

Obscure whisky – Anything from Compass Box, esp. ‘The Peat Monster’ (fairly well known in the trade now, but still rare to Joe Public)

Vodka – Chose a good brand and flavour it up yourself – currently making Jasmine Martini's using home-made Jasmine Vodka

Rum – Look to the French West Indies and find some Rum Agricole, totally different flavour to the molasses based rum most people are used to. Rhum JM (from Amathus) springs to mind as a good example.

Tequila – There are some good Mezcals appearing in the country now, not just famous for the worm!

Hope this helps some…

Happy Hunting!

Hi SirMixalot, Please have a look on strengthandflavour.com and let me know if you fancy any of those. I also have some very nice Armagnac and Cognac.

Best

John
