BrewDog has announced it is cutting ties with American brewer Scofflaw, which it planned to introduce to the UK this weekend in a much-publicised beer tour.

The scrapped deal is the result of a press release issued by Scofflaw, which stated that the Georgia-based brewer would give Trump supporters free beer.

BrewDog took to social media to respond to the ensuing backlash. ‘The Scofflaw release was announced without our knowledge or consent,’ tweeted the company. ‘We are in no way aligned with their position and we will of course be cancelling all the events and sending all of the beer back. ‘We care about beer and people. Not hate.’

Scofflaw also used its social media platforms to attempt to mitigate the situation. The self-proclaimed ‘redneck hooligans’ tweeted that its PR company Frank was responsible for the controversial statement.

‘We did not approve or release said message and we are working with our PR firm to fix this error. This post was done on our behalf without our consent or knowledge,’ Scofflaw wrote on Twitter.

In a follow-up press release, Scofflaw owner Matt Shirah maintained that his company had no part in the Trump message. ‘This post is absolute nonsense,’ he said. ‘While we definitely have country roots, no one at Scofflaw Brewing or those associated with our brand, is now or has ever been rooted in hate.

‘This misinformation shared over social media today is simply wrong. We couldn’t care less about your political viewpoint, only that you like our beer.’
