Brighton-based Curry Leaf Cafe was crowned the UK’s Best Independent Craft Beer Restaurant earlier this week at the Society of Independent Brewers‘ (SIBA) Business Awards 2019, held the BeerX conference in Liverpool. Imbibe, which sponsored the Craft Beer Restaurant category, was present at the ceremony to hand over the award.

We’re incredibly proud to have won. Craft beer has been an integral part of our identity since we launched in spring 2014 and this award will really help communicate our passion for craft beer to people,’ said operations manager Stewart Cumming (left in the picture). ‘Having failed five years ago to find anyone in the restaurant sector taking craft beer seriously, we really felt there was an opportunity for us to make our mark on the scene.’

Curry Leaf Cafe serves food inspired by southern Indian cuisine, paired with a carefully selected and regularly changing list of over 20 craft beers and ciders.

‘A winner, without a doubt. Not only a well-crafted list with a rationale behind the range, but every beer [is]one you would like to drink,’ commented Imbibe‘s beer and cider editor Susanna Forbes, who was among the judges for the category. ‘[The beer list] is easy to navigate, with useful broad food match tips at the head of each section… There’s a beer flight option, with three beers matched to different courses, and vegan and gluten free clearly marked. Can’t go wrong.’

Curry Leaf Cafe opened in April 2014 and has since expanded for a total of three sites, all in Brighton. Plans for the immediate future include adding more keg lines at the original site in the Brighton Lanes. Towards the end of 2019, the team will be opening a fourth venue in a location outside of their home city.
