As the tsunami of sustainability stories show no sign of abating, let’s take a moment to appreciate Carlsberg’s latest effort, which it thinks will reduce its plastic usage by 76%.
Three years in the making, the new Snap Pack system, which sees cans glued together using adhesive dots, has been developed so that the company no longer needs to use shrink wrap or hi-cone to hold its cans together.
The new packaging means the company will cut its plastic use by 1,000 tons per year.
‘Today, good brewing also means protecting the climate, nature and the environment,’ said Simon Boas Hoffmeyer, the head of sustainability at Carlsberg.
‘We have succeeded in developing an adhesive that works in combination with the printing ink and can lacquer without damaging it,’ declared Christoph Georg von Aichinger, senior sales director at NMP Systems, the packaging company that developed the new design.
The individual cans can easily be separated from the pack in one movement.
