Imbibe Live Lager Challenge opens for entries

Drinks: Beers, Drinks
Other: Competitions

After a successful IPA challenge at Imbibe Live 2017, the battle of the beer is back for 2018, and this time it’s lager’s turn.

Lager Challenge logoBritish brewing is booming and the Imbibe Live Lager Challenge, in association with the Society of Independent Brewers, aims to discover Britain’s best lager, from sessionable helles through to dry pilsners.

The winner of the Lager Challenge will take home a lager (geddit?) than life prize – a seasonal listing at a selection of Mitchells & Butlers top pubs.

So here’s how it works: entries and samples are submitted, then five finalists will be chosen to battle it out at Imbibe Live (2-3 July) where the audience will name its ultimate winner. Each finalist will also have the chance to share their beers at the Hop & Apple Bar during the two-day show.

The five finalists will be chosen by a judging panel – including Dorber and North Brew Co’s head brewer Seb Brik – at Liverpool’s SIBA Beer X UK 2018.

‘SIBA is proud to be working with Imbibe once more this year and looks forward to hosting the first round of judging at our Beer X event in Liverpool,’ said the Association’s Neil Walker. ‘Quality, independently-brewed lagers are growing in popularity with beer drinkers and now is a great time to celebrate this much misunderstood and diverse range of beer styles.’

‘We want to see a broad variety of styles and sub-styles. From the old and the venerable through to the modern. Lagers which show wonderful brewing and a true depth of accomplishment,’ added chair of judges, Mark Dorber of The Anchor at Walberswick.

‘We were absolutely over the moon to win the Imbibe 2017 IPA challenge,’ said Christian Townsley of  North Brewing Co. ‘Getting past the initial round was in itself a huge achievement but to go on and beat 39 other finalists – I was left speechless. It has helped to elevate the beer’s name and our brand, and the M&B seasonal listing is another fantastic benefit to the award. We’re delighted we’ll be reaching such an audience.’

Entries must be made online by 26 February 2018.
