Champagne is set to have an iconic vintage with the harvest promised to be over by September. However another week of the current weather, with temperatures hitting over 35℃, and the grapes will be too sweet.
‘If the grapes become too sweet, but are still not ready to pick, it will ruin the harvest,’ said Moët & Chandon’s brand ambassador Ivan Falletta. ‘We need the balance of acidity and sugar.’
Currently the forecast has next week in Reims staying in the low 30s. If this inches up the house will have to work hard to protect the grapes – especially Chardonnay, which is the most fragile of the Champagne varieties.
‘If we get a little more water in August, we will still be on track for a perfect harvest,’ said Ethan Boroian, UK champagne ambassador for Moët Hennessy.
However if the predicted dry spell continues the much anticipated 2018 vintage won’t be making the grade.
