After scouring the country, Auchentoshan has found two new members to join The New Malt Order. Lachlan Rooney of The Voodoo Rooms in Edinburgh and Charles Roche of Scout in London will be rubbing shoulders and swapping ideas with the 10 global comp winners to create Edition 2 of The Bartender’s Malt in Glasgow this September.

Sixty-five bartenders from around the UK were invited to enter the competition, and were each sent a kit to create and develop an ingredient they had fermented that represented their home city, for use in an Auchentoshan-based cocktail.

Only eight made it to this week’s live finals at 5CC, Clerkenwell, but ultimately Rooney and Roche triumphed, holding their nerve across two rounds and impressed judges Gary Sharpen, co-founder of The Cocktail Lovers, Thomas Aske, founding member of Fluid Movement and 2016 UK winner, Jack Wareing of Dandelyan.

Edition 1 of The Bartender’s Malt was created by the inaugural The New Malt Order in October 2016 and launched at our very own Imbibe Live in July.

‘Auchentoshan is not your traditional single malt whisky,’ said Marco Di Ciacca, senior brand manager for Auchentoshan. ‘We have done things differently for almost two centuries and The New Malt Order is no exception. Auchentoshan is dedicated to recruiting and nurturing fresh, creative talent from behind the bar who can demonstrate they challenge the norms to become part of this global collective.

‘We definitely have that in Lachlan and Charles. We really felt they exemplified the spirit of Auchentoshan by using their creativity and passion to challenge the normal conventions of malt whisky.’
