In true world-saving fashion, global hospitality collective Experimental Group (Experimental Cocktail Club, Compagnie des Vins Surnaturels, Beef Club & Ballroom and Experimental Beach) has announced the roll out of new eco-friendly, biodegradable straws across their establishments in London, New York, Paris and Ibiza.
The amount of plastic waste created globally by our industry is mammoth, with the Group alone currently going through 500,000 straws alone each year. Having committed to reducing the impact on the environment, the Group started work on the project with Ecovissa, who source and distribute eco-friendly products, and Oceanic Global Foundation, a non-profit organisation addressing issues impacting the ocean, two years ago.
So how do these straws work? It seems simple enough: instead of plastic, the innovative straw is made of PLA (polylactic acid), a plant-based bioplastic made from corn starch. It is a renewable resource that is fully biodegradable and compostable. We’re wondering why everyone isn’t doing it…
After initially rolling out the straws at Experimental Beach Ibiza, they will now be available globally, starting with London’s Henrietta Hotel.
‘This is a subject very close to our hearts. It is a very exciting project that was initially spearheaded by our manager at Experimental Beach Ibiza, Nicolas Baptiste,’ said Xavier Padovani from Experimental Group. ‘The move will position the bars, hotels and restaurants of Experimental Group as leading the way globally in dramatically reducing waste in an industry which is so driven by this agenda whilst creating a communal shift towards responsible consumption.’
