Far flung gin reaches for exotic botanicals

Got a thirst for travel? New Far Reaches Gin is a London Dry style, made in London, that’s pulled in botanicals from five different continents. The recipe has been inspired by the globe-trotting adventures of founders Andrew and Emma Whiting, who are both keen sailors.

Far Reaches ginThe small-batch gin is made in a 500-litre pot still, using a quadruple-distilled grain spirit base, with 13 botanicals. They include sarsaparilla from South America, quandong from Australia, grains of paradise from Africa and kumquat from Asia.

‘Far Reaches offers a new take on other gins with citrus-focused flavours from exotic botanicals,’ said Andrew. ‘Instead of the more conventional orange, lemon or lime, our recipe balances juniper with fresh kumquat notes. Then quandong and tangy sarsaparilla add a bittersweet edge.’

We found obvious kumquat aromas on the nose, along with peppery spice and some vanilla top notes. The palate is super-smooth and creamy, with sweetness from the kumquat balanced by bitterness from the quandong, followed by a mouth-watering tanginess on the finish. We say show it off in a gloriously silky Martini.
