Hawksmoor is set to launch its second venture outside London in the banking hall of former RBS headquarters. The latest restaurant will be part of The Edinburgh Grand – the city’s new five-star accommodation and social hub in St Andrew Square.
Launched in 2008 by childhood friends Will Beckett and Huw Gott, with then-manager Nick Strangeway shaping much of the initial concept, the first and original Hawksmoor near Spitalfields became the successful blue print for their next six restaurants, including one in Manchester and five spread across the capital.
The Edinburgh restaurant, set to be one of the biggest at 170-covers, has had to be carefully tailored to its heritage-listed building. Built between 1936 and 1942, it’s a rare example of late art-deco Scottish architecture. The team has managed to celebrate the building’s original features, preserving the polished limestone-clad interior and a series of etched-glass windows by Scottish artist Sadie McLellan.
Those familiar with the concept of steak and cocktails will feel at home on seeing the curved bar in the centre of the space, created using panelling from a grand Glaswegian townhouse.
‘We’re trying to build a restaurant that stands the test of time and becomes an Edinburgh institution, and to that end we can’t wait to welcome visitors to the room again as it has been closed off to the public for decades,’ said Will Beckett.
No preview of the drinks list has yet to be glimpsed by Imbibe, but if the team continue their successful formulae, the offering will no doubt be a strong one.
