The British public’s love of bubbly shows no signs of abating any time soon and Justerini & Brooks is targeting the on-trade with Champagne Philipponnat.

The wine merchant, based in London’s St James’s Street, has signed a deal to become exclusive UK distributor for the Champagne House.

In the autumn it will host the world exclusive launch of the 2008 vintage of Clos des Goisses, described by J&B as ‘Champagne’s original truly great single vineyard bottling’.

In the meantime it is targeting operators seeking to bring diversity to their wine lists with the producer’s Royale Réserve Brut and Non Dosé NV, Royale Réserve Rose NV, Vintage Blanc de Noirs, Vintage ‘1522’ and the wines from the Clos de Goisses vineyard.

‘These are champagnes with style, personality and a real sense of place,’ Julian Campbell, Champagne buyer at J&B, said. ‘As a House they are big enough to ensure remarkably consistent levels of quality, yet small enough to be driven by boutique levels of care and attention.’

Of the range, he said it is ‘both varied and complete’. He added: ‘[The] winemaking team is constant but never static. A huge amount of work has been done in the last decade on the quality and length of ageing of the reserve wines and the results, particularly in the incredible quality of the Royale Réserve bottlings, are clear to see.

‘Finally, as if all that wasn’t enough, you have the jewel in the crown, Clos des Goisses, perhaps Champagne’s most remarkable single vineyard, and undoubtedly one of Champagne’s most illustrious bottlings.’

Philipponnat has 20ha of Premier and Grand Cru vineyards in Aÿ, Mareuil and Avenay and bottles are aged and riddled manually in its 18th century cellars.

It is one of the last Champagne houses to be run by a member of its founding family and has been under the guidance of Charles Philipponnat since 2000.

He said: ‘We believe our wines have reached the level of quality expected by the most discerning customers. With their experience of talking to the world’s most knowledgeable collectors, and passion for sourcing so many of the world’s greatest wines, Justerini & Brooks seemed logically the right people to handle our distribution.

‘We are convinced that signing with them is a natural step in taking Champagne Philipponnat to the next level.’
