Green growth

Pursuing environmentally friendly policies isn’t just virtuous – it can help generate new business, according to Bibendum.

The company’s managing director Michael Saunders made the claim after the business won two 2011 EECO awards recognising outstanding work on green issues in Camden, to add to its retention of the Corporate Social Responsibility award at this year’s International Wine Challenge.

Saunders pointed to Bibendum’s work with Battlesteads Hotel and Restaurant in Northumberland, where it has tried to create a wine list in tune with the venue’s environmental credentials (it has won several green tourism awards).

Battlesteads owner Richard Slade said the ‘exciting and unusual’ green wine list had increased wine sales by 42% since its introduction in April.

Saunders added: ‘More and more of our existing and prospective customers are demanding to know about our green policies and the actions we are taking to minimise our impact on the environment.

‘It is definitely a growing consideration for many on-trade businesses when considering suppliers.’
