Ossett Brewery expands with new microbrewing project

West Yorkshire-based Ossett Brewery has invested £1.7million to develop the Salt Beer Factory, a new spin-off 20hl microbrewery and taproom in the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage village of Saltaire.

Ossett Brewery has focused on British cask ales since its foundation in 1998, brewing classic bitters and pale ales. With the new project it aims to expand its appeal to a new generation of craft beer drinkers, offering more modern, international, hop-forward styles like IPAs, New England IPAs, lagers and stouts. Salt Beer Factory is also planning a series of brewing collaborations and one-off brews.

‘The vision for Salt has been three years in the making, a concept that began with an idea to brew some beer at the back of [Ossett Brewery’s own pub] the Hop in Saltaire has now evolved into something much greater than we could’ve ever imagined’ said Ossett Brewery owner Jamie Lawson.

The Salt Beer Factory will be housed in a 1904 Grade II Victorian tramshed and aspires to become a real hub for beer enthusiasts, organising live events and brewery tours, which will involve interactive activities.

More developments are in the pipeline, with two Salt bars, named Craft Asylum, set to open their doors in Leeds on 30 November, one by Granary Wharf and the one on Greek Street. In addition to Salt’s own brews, Craft Asylum’s will serve guest beers, a selection of over 50 gins and premium coffee.
