It’s a golden opportunity: the chance to compete with other bartenders from around the world in Courvoisier’s first-ever global cocktail competition. Inspired by the success of its brand campaign, The Toast of Paris Since 1889, the premium cognac house is challenging bartenders to create a new twist on the ultimate celebration drink: a Classic Champagne Cocktail.
Courvoisier has been inextricably linked with celebrations since the Paris Golden Age (1870-1910), when it was the toast of choice at the inauguration of the Eiffel Tower in 1889. During this shining period in French history, Paris became the glamorous centre of a progressive and innovative society, where new ideas flourished – and Courvoisier perfectly captured the spirit of the age, reflecting the optimism and decadence of the city in a rich and complex cognac.
Now, Courvoisier wants bartenders to channel the creative exuberance of the Paris Golden Age by devising a unique twist on the celebratory Champagne cocktail, to showcase their skill and the versatility of the cognac in mixed drinks. To enter, bartenders must create a recipe inspired by the Paris Golden Age, using Courvoisier VSOP or above (see below for full rules and the signature Courvoisier Champagne Cocktail serve).
Ahead of the competition deadline, Courvoisier will be holding a series of masterclasses across the UK (dates below) hosted by global brand ambassador, Rebecca Asseline, and Maxxium UK’s Mixxit team. Featuring a Le Nez tasting of Courvoisier’s range, information on the brand’s history and Paris Golden Age heritage, cocktails and food pairings, these masterclasses offer a unique opportunity for bartenders to immerse themselves in the brand as they research and develop their Classic Champagne Cocktail recipe.
The deadline for submissions is 25 March and six semi-finalists will be chosen to compete in London this April for a place in the global final. The UK winner will then go on to compete in the global final in Paris in May. Up for grabs is a coveted prize: a bespoke blend of Courvoisier cognac dating back to the 1800s presented in an engraved crystal decanter.
The finalists will travel to the Courvoisier Château in Jarnac to meet with Courvoisier’s master blender, Patrice Pinet, and visit the historic Paradis Cellar. The UK winner will have the opportunity to represent Courvoisier during London Cocktail Week 2016 and take part in future campaign activity.
The Toast of Paris International Cocktail Competition: the rules
– Bartenders must create a twist on the Classic Champagne Cocktail.
– Bartenders must explain how their recipe was inspired by the Paris Golden Age.
– Bartenders will be marked on: presentation, balance, taste, creativity and the link to Courvoisier’s house style, craftsmanship and Parisian heritage.
– Cocktails must include:
- Minimum 25ml of Courvoisier VSOP or above
- Two homemade ingredients maximum
Glass: Champagne coupette
Method: Soak a sugar cube in bitters and drop into a flute. Cover with Courvoisier VSOP and top with champagne.
