Shaker Group opens first hotel

Bar operator and hospitality consultancy and training group, Shaker is to open its first hotel in April, after purchasing the Old Rectory House in Redditch, Worcestershire for £1.45m.

The site is intended to be the first of a number of planned hotel sites, according to Shaker Group managing director Adam Freeth. The company already owns cocktail bar Shaker & Company in Euston, London and Birmingham restaurant, Gas Street Social.

It is now undertaking a £500,000 refurbishment of the ten-bedroom property, with opening due for April. The Grade II listed Elizabethan includes three-acres of land, 70-cover Orangery Restaurant, 30-cover cocktail lounge, 60-cover terrace and gardens, and a 14-cover private dining or conference space.

Freeth said: ‘The hotel brings together our disciplines and was a sound investment that needed to be brought into the 21st century. We were also looking for a home for our head office so the investment made sense and as it’s a small hotel so it gives us the opportunity to learn small, and use this as the foundation for further growth into this sector. [The property] is on home soil. I grew up in this town and know the area very well.’

The company is currently looking for new sites in the Midlands for a roll out of the Gas Street Social restaurant and bar model, alongside new locations for the Shaker & Company bar brand in London. Freer confirmed the group is also currently considering a lease for a Birmingham Shaker & Company bar.

He added: ‘We are developing hospitality business models around a core focus of people, sympathetic intelligent design and cocktail focused beverage programs. The number [of sites]isn’t the important thing. The right sites and growing organically with our people [is].’
