With the UK hospitality industry already suffering from a staff shortage, the impending challenges of Brexit are a daunting future for many employers.
But a new charity is committed to turning these Brexit-induced challenges into opportunities. Only a Pavement Away (OAPA) connects employers with potential employees looking for a fresh start.
Partnering with organisations like Crisis and The Chrysalis Foundation, OAPA matches ex-offenders, ex-service personnel, the homeless and vulnerable members of society with pubs and bars in need of staff. Each individual taking part in the programme will receive training and guidance in the industry, along with a 12-month support package.
According to OAPA, the hospitality sector will require 1.3m employees in the next six years. The organisation aims to fill 300 jobs in its first year, 500 in its second and 800 in its third, doing its part to bridge that gap.
Pub Love, Brewhouse & Kitchen and Young’s have already gotten involved in trials of the programme, and the OAPA is seeking more industry employers ahead of its official launch in October.
‘Through the support of many other passionate people in the sector the project has been brought to life,’ said Greg Mangham, founder of OAPA, whose hospitality career spans more than 40 years.
‘Now we are working to ensure our partnerships, processes and support package has the solid foundation from which to grow the charity.’
