Canadian café and bake shop brand Tim Hortons has opened its first UK venue and announced ambitious plans to roll-out over 100 stores nationwide.
The first store is located on Argyle Street in Glasgow and will serve signature Tim Hortons coffee and doughnuts among other food and baked goods. It will be the brand’s first European store.
The café chain, founded in 1964 by hockey player Tim Horton, is a cult brand in its home market. Currently, eight out of 10 cups of coffee sold across Canada are served at Tim Hortons, with more than 5.3 million Canadians – or 15% of the population – visiting the café daily.
It was bought in 2014 by Burger King, with the two companies then forming Restaurant Brands International, one of the biggest fast food restaurant operators in the world with over 23,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries. The UK launch is being steered by franchise operator SK Group. The group previously helped in the UK expansion of Domino’s Pizza.
SK Group director, Gurprit Dhaliwal said the company wanted to replicate its success in Canada and that the Glasgow launch comes ahead of a ‘full-blown’ roll-out to cities across the UK.
‘It’s hard to explain just how important Tim Hortons is to Canadians,’ he said, ‘it’s not just a restaurant, it’s a way of life and a place of “home”, and we’re positive Great Britain will fall in love the brand. There is nothing like it in the UK.’
Dhaliwal added that the UK launch was a strategic move into Europe.
