Union Coffee invests in coffee training facility

Artisan coffee roaster Union Hand-Roasted Coffee has launched a roaster of a training facility – ‘Campus’, in east London.

Union CoffeeThe new centre, aimed at encouraging the UK’s growing coffee culture, is located at the company’s headquarters and will provide a new education and roasting facility.

Offering Union’s own training courses and SCAE-certified courses for baristas, the space will host roasting classes aimed at improving coffee shop owners’ and small chains’ understanding of the process. Facilities will also include a fully-equipped roasting space available to hire.

Special courses designed to improve baristas’ coffee knowledge and brewing skills will be available – covering brewing techniques, cupping training and many SCAE Diploma modules.

Coffee shops can also benefit from Union Coffee’s training centre with the opportunity to ‘espresso’ themselves, develop unique blends, secure microlots, and acquire packing facilities and materials.

Other training includes guiding novice baristas to become their company coffee trainer, as well as enter barista competitions.

‘We want the end customer to enjoy our beautiful coffee presented at its finest, so we place great value on barista training and coffee education as an essential stage in the process,’ said development manager Geoff Cliff on the programme. ‘This is why we have invested in expanding our headquarters… all designed to give the best facilities in which to learn about all sectors of the coffee industry.’

Adding that he wants to inspire a new generation of roasters, Campus general manager Dave Jameson commented: ‘The new roasting courses and facility for hire are designed for those customers interested in creating their own coffee, but who don’t feel ready, able or confident enough to invest in their own roastery. Through this new facility, they can develop their own signature blends and roasts and take that extra ownership step in their supply chain.’
