New Scottish tonic water Cushiedoos launches with no quinine

New premium tonic water Cushiedoos has launched, positioning itself as a no-quinine brand, made instead with Scottish water and botanicals including Scottish heather, Scottish silver birch, yellow gentian and wormwood.

The brand is also proudly claiming it has 24% less sugar than Fever-Tree Indian tonic water.

Cushiedoos says it wanted to deliver that trademark bitterness without having to fly to another continent to source the quinine.

Andrew Ligertwood, founder of Drink Better Ltd and the creator of Cushiedoos tonic, explained that while Scotland is on the world stage when it comes to so much of its national produce, there was a glaring absence of any premium tonic made with Scottish ingredients.

‘Scotland has a reputation for excellence when it comes to our amazing natural larder,’ says Andrew Ligertwood, founder of Drink Better Ltd and the creator of Cushiedoos tonic. ‘It struck me, as a I was enjoying a gin and tonic – the gin was made in Scotland but the tonic wasn’t – that there was a gap for a premium tonic water made using Scottish ingredients and research then showed me that there was a demand for it.’

Since launching Cushiedoos in April 2018, Ligertwood has established around 30 on- and off-trade accounts.

As for the name, Cushiedoos comes from the Scottish word for wood pigeon, a bird that pairs for life, which Ligertwood is linking to the enduring a partnership of a G&T.

For the moment the yellow gentian and wormwood come from Europe but these plants are already being grown for the brand in Scotland, with hopes they can be incorporated into the recipe within a year.

Other ingredients include citric acid and British beet sugar.
