Top of the Tree

Those kings of tonic water Fever-Tree have announced a new addition to their range of mixers: elderflower.

Available from July, it’s made with elderflowers that are hand-picked on a small Gloucestershire farm between May and June, and will be available to the on-trade in 200ml glass bottles.

Not as sickly sweet as some elderflower-flavoured products out there, the headline ingredient acts as a brilliant, gentle foil to quinine’s bitter flavour, with an almost sherbet-like character emerging in the delicate spritz.

When mixed with a generous hit of Plymouth, it stands up well to the gin, producing a well-balanced, refreshing drink.

For all the elderflower naysayers out there (and I was firmly in that camp before), it’s definitely worth trying with an open mind.
