Bristol’s Dan Bovey wins Wild Turkey competition

Beer, jam and a little bourbon knowledge have earned Dan Bovey from Be at One in Bristol a trip to Kentucky, as he made the top spot in the 2015 Wild Turkey Cockail Competition on Wednesday.

Bovey took first place ahead of White Lyan’s Robin Honhold and Mojo Manchester’s Adam Binnersley with a drink called Russell’s Preserve, a sour made with Wild Turkey 81 and apricot syrup, Sink the Bismarck (Brewdog’s 41% abv quadruple IPA) and Regans’ Orange Bitters. The competition also included a bourbon knowledge quiz and a Wild Turkey Manhattan tasting challenge.

Bovey was singled out as winner by master distiller Eddie Russell himself, half of the father-and-son distilling pair who make the Kentucky bourbon.

‘Everybody did a great job. I know me being here sort of makes people a little nervous, although they shouldn’t be because I’m just an old Kentucky Boy,’ Russell said. ‘These are the guys who are growing the industry and doing such a wonderful job.’

‘Dan’s drink made the most of the flavours in our bourbon. Coupled with what he knew about Wild Turkey without having been at the distillery makes Dan a worthy winner this year.’

‘It’s just unbelievable and completely unexpected,’ Bovey said. ‘I went on first so watching everyone present after me and seeing they were all such a high standard – it has completely blown me away that I’ve won. It completely freaked me out having Eddie there – because a lot of my presentation was about Eddie and the Russells, so telling Eddie about what he does was nerve-wracking and crazy.’

Bovey, Honhold and Binnersley have won a trip to Kentucky via New York City, to visit some of the world’s best bars along with the Wild Turkey distillery.

Glass: Rocks
Garnish: Hops and orange zest
Method: Dry shake all ingredients, then shake on ice. Strain into the glass on cubed ice and garnish.
45ml Wild Turkey 81
22ml lemon juice
15ml BrewDog Sink the Bismark
15ml egg white
15ml apricot syrup (made with equal measures apricot jam and sugar syrup)
2 dashes Regans’ Orange Bitters
