If you think more oak is the only thing your bourbon is missing, you’re in for a treat. That’s exactly what Jim Beam’s added to its whiskey to create its latest expression.
Launched in London yesterday, the brand new Jim Beam Double Oak starts life much like other Jim Beam, but after its first four years of maturation in charred American oak barrels, it is transferred into second freshly-charred oak barrels for a variable amount of time – somewhere around six to nine months – to draw out more of that oak character.
And it worked. Caramel and burnt toffee aromas lead to woody spice on the palate – no surprises there – but in amongst that appealing dryness is more caramel, and a dark chocolate and mint note too. All that caramel and spice has no doubt inspired the brand’s suggestion to serve this in a Double Oak Old Fashioned, but don’t let that stop you from experimenting with it in all manner of stirred-down drinks.
‘My family has been making history and producing bourbon for more than 200 years,’ said master distiller Fred Noe. ‘Throughout the decades, we have always enjoyed pushing boundaries and innovating while also staying true to our family’s traditions. Jim Beam Double Oak is the latest example of this.’
Double Oak is presented in a brand new bottle, broader than the Jim Beam bottles of the past – in keeping with ongoing repackaging of the whole range this year.
