Hotel Café Royal is set to unveil a new bar this month in honour of its more famous past guest David Bowie, who famously held the retirement party for his alter ego Ziggy Stardust at Café Royal in the 1970s.
Ziggy’s will sit next to the hotel’s recently opened restaurant Laurent and will serve twists on some of Bowie’s purportedly favourite drinks, alongside cocktails inspired by his life and albums The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
Drinks come from the hotel’s bars and beverages manager Fabio Spinetti, formerly of The Connaught, and the newly established Ziggy’s bar team. Highlights include Animal Grace made with an orange shrub using leftover orange skins, orange juice and Chardonnay vinegar, tequila, Ancho Reyes apricot liqueur and agave syrup and Femme Fatale inspired by Bowie’s love of Martinis, using Japanese liqueur and Byrrh, garnished with a rose petal.
Decorating the room will be photographs of David Bowie by one of Bowie’s official photographers Mick Rock. Coinciding with the launch, Hotel Café Royal is also unveiling a new menu in its Green Bar, celebrating the original Café Royal cocktail book of 1937.
Ziggy’s launches on 20 September.
