Pierre Lecat Cognac is the latest addition to Coles Trading’s portfolio, with its spirits available to the UK on-trade from 1 June.
While the Lassoudière family started growing vines on its land 80 years ago, and has been making eaux de vie in Cognac for four decades, it’s only recently that the house decided to release its own brand of spirits, rather than solely supplying the region’s big names.
Pierre Lecat Cognac takes its name from a family friend who supported the family financially, and its logo from his occupation – watchmaking. All the spirits are made from family-owned vineyards in Fins Bois.
Tim Coles of Coles Trading said: ‘We are delighted to be working with Pierre Lecat to introduce these superbly crafted products and look forward to them soon gracing the finest establishments in the UK.’
The range comprises four spirits. First, the VS Instinct (£40), with traditional aromas of dried apricots, vanilla, sweet cocoa, plus some flowers and some herbal characters. It’s mellow on the palate, with dried stone fruit before a nice walnut bitterness comes through, continuing into a dark chocolate finish.
VSOP Experience (£55) ups the ante towards aromas of dates, rum-soaked raisins, and still plenty of sweet spice to smooth things over. There’s some citrus bitterness first on the palate, then flavours of grapes and chocolate shavings, with a lengthy finish.
FInally, XO Mémoire (£109) has aromas of dried tropical fruits, but some herbal, camphor notes too, and plenty of creamy caramel aromas. Rounder than its siblings on the palate, it punches with some rich fruit and spice, nicely balanced by good dryness, with a lengthy earthy finish that also brings out touches of orange peel and dark chocolate.
All this is completed by an entry-level VS called N1, aged for three years rather than the five that the VS Instinct gets. And a Pineau des Charentes will join the line-up later this year.
