Courvoisier recreated La Belle Époque at the Punch Room at The London Edition today for the final of its inaugural Toast of Paris cocktail competition. Witek Wojaczek of the Beaufort Bar at The Savoy took top spot out of the six finalists.
The comp consisted of two rounds. In the first, competitors presented their twist on the classic Champagne Cocktail for the judges – a panel consisting of Balthazar’s Brian Silva, Courvoisier’s Rebecca Asseline and Mixxit’s David Miles. In the second round, the top three were required to create a drink from a mystery box, inspired by scented candles created by Erika Duffy to represent Paris by night and day during the Belle Époque era.
For his first drink, inspired by the bohemians, and telling stories about the Moulin Rouge, Wojaczek combined Courvoisier VSOP, Cabernet Sauvignon, rose liqueur and Peychaud’s bitters, topping that with Louis Roederer champagne. For the second round, he chose the candle representing daytime in Paris, creating a twist on a sour with Courvoisier VSOP, fig liqueur, liquorice, orange bitters, lemon juice and egg white.
‘I wanted to find a way to represent the Belle Époque differently,’ said Wojaczek. ‘I wanted to highlight Courvoisier in a way that focussed on a celebration of life and beauty.’
Library Bar at The Lanesborough’s Luca Rapetti and Rules’ Mikey Cook took second and third place, respectively.
Wojaczek goes to Paris in May to represent the UK in the Toast of Paris final.
