After the selling of George Clooney’s Casamigos tequila brand to Diageo last June (think a staggering $1bn), the booming brand is expanding, adding a smoky variant to its agave portfolio.
Casamigos Mezcal is a blanco mezcal made in Santiago Matatlán, Oaxaca Mexico, from 100% Espadin agaves. After fermentation, the mezcal is twice distilled and allowed to stabilise for 30 days before mountain spring water is added to finish off the spirit.
Casamigo’s tequila is said to be as smooth as its famous founder, easy to drink and ‘smoked to perfection’. ‘There’s nothing like it on the market,’ said founders George Clooney and Rande Gerber. ‘We’ve created a mezcal that is as good as our tequila.’
We’ve yet to try it, but Casamigos Mezcal is described by the brand as being balanced and elegant, with hints of tamarind, pomegranate, banana and mango. We’ve also heard talk of fresh herbal mint aromas, dried oregano and thyme, with delicate tones of smoke, hints of licorice and mineral nuances lead to a long silky finish.
With its smoothness (clearly) taken from Clooney, it was down to Rande Gerber to design the bottle, which is quite a process. Each bottle is hand-crafted and rubbed to ensure each is different, before being heated, cooled, having labels printed and then placed into a lehr (kiln) for curing. The bottles are then heated for 25 minute intervals. ‘This is a bottle people will want to take home after they finish drinking it, and my collection sure is growing fast,’ added Rande.
