Famed for its single malt, The Speyside Distillery has decided to go all on-trend, launching a limited-edition gin from botanicals grown in its grounds.
The two expressions are named after, and take inspiration from, the Romantic poet Lord Byron, in tribute to Byron’s love for the Scottish Highlands.
The gins – Bird Cherry and Melancholy Thistle – use botanicals from the gardens of the artisan distillery, and only 150 numbered bottles of each from Batch 1 have been produced. All botanicals in the gins are seasonal, so once it’s gone, it’s gone.
Bird Cherry is said to be full of lemon-scented fern, lady’s bedstraw, rowan, wild thyme, juniper and blackberry. It is described as being light and soft on the nose, with a sweet fruit and spice palate, leading to a mellow and fruity finish.
Melancholy Thistle is joined by sweet vernal grass, Scots pine, juniper, rowan, downy birch and aspen to give it a vibrant nose, citrus-fresh palate and smooth, woody finish.
‘The result is two very unique and different gin expressions that will be loved by sophisticated palates,’ said Speyside Distillery CEO John Harvey McDonough. ‘The gins capture both the taste of the Cairngorm National Park and the decades of shared knowledge and passion by two experts in their respective fields.
‘We have wanted to add to our portfolio of premium spirits for some time and with all these wonderful botanicals on our doorstep, we saw an opportunity to create something a world away from our single malt whisky.’
