Two years since it first hit the market, poitín brand Bán has joined the Indie Brands portfolio in the UK.
The spirit, produced at The Echlinville Distillery in Northern Ireland, has until this point been a hand sell for founder Dave Mulligan, spreading the word about this formerly illicit Irish spirit category since his brand’s launch in the summer of 2015. Bán is produced from a mix of potatoes, malted barley and sugar beets, and clocks in at 48% abv.
‘Poitín was always going to take time to get going,’ Mulligan told Imbibe. ‘It was important to seed the brand myself, and get people to put a face to it while getting the spirit in front of as many bartenders as possible. We are only just out of the hand selling stage with poitín, and a distributor like Indie understands that.’
Bán joins brands like Arette Tequila, La Hechicera Rum and Nuestra Soledad Mezcal in the Indie Brands stable.
‘On seeing the portfolio and hearing their ethos we knew we’d found the right team to represent us in the UK,’ said Mulligan. ‘Believing in brands that break the rules and have an obsession with craft and quality, there couldn’t be a more natural fit.’
The poitín brand recently held a pop-up in Dublin entitled BAR 1661, promoting the category in general. For six weeks, the bar offered a comprehensive selection of poitíns, as well as a number of poitín cocktails.
All sales of Bán in the UK will move to Indie Brands, with an RRP of £36 and wholesale price per bottle of £27, and now available in cases of six.
