It’s that time of year again, when customers desperately eye the coveted outdoor tables that were shunned just a few weeks before, and it seems that every other order is a spritz. Aperitivo season has officially arrived.
It’s only fitting, then, that Italian spirit brand Italicus has chosen this sunny time of year to launch its Art of Italicus Aperitivo Challenge. The new art-inspired bartending competition is searching for the best aperitivo-style cocktail.
The competition asks entrants to come up with an ‘artistic’ cocktail that uses a minimum of 30ml of Italicus’ Rosolio di Bergamotto spirit, along with no more than four other ingredients. Recipes must include measurements, garnishes, glassware and presentation suggestions.
Eight finalists will be chosen to compete in the UK national final in September, where they will shake and stir their takes on the aperitif for a panel of judges. The champion will win the title of the UK’s bar artist of the year and work experience at American Bar at the Savoy in London.
The UK winner will also get the chance to compete against other finalists at the global competition in Milan in November 2018. There, the ultimate winner will become the world’s bar artist of the year and be taken on a three-city tour of Europe, working guest shifts in top bars.
For Italicus, the competition is an opportunity to demonstrate the innovation behind cocktails, which the brand describes as ‘art’s liquid expression’. Its signature Rosolio di Bergamotto spirit showcases distinctive, delicate bergamot in all its citrusy complexity, so entrants should have a flavourful canvas on which to paint their aperitivo masterpieces.
Interested bartenders are asked to submit their recipes by 31 July.
