Snowball season: By the Dutch brings its advocaat to the UK

Break out the lemonade and ready the ice. Amsterdam-based spirits company By the Dutch is bringing its latest creation, a take on the traditional Dutch liqueur advocaat, to the UK.

Often compared to eggnog, advocaat is a blend of egg whites and yolks, sugar, vanilla and brandy. It’s a key ingredient in that holiday favourite, the Snowball, which has been rising in popularity in recent years.

By the Dutch’s version of the liqueur has a slightly higher abv than other versions, sitting at 20% abv, while most clock in at 14%. It also claims a thinner structure than others on the market.

Imbibe found the advocaat to have a pleasing silky texture – though still quite thick – with subtle notes of vanilla and a noticeable peppery kick of alcohol, which mitigates its sweetness. The liqueur truly shines in a classic Snowball.

Unsurprisingly, then, the Snowball is touted as one of By the Dutch Advocaat’s signature serves. However, it’s also recommended in less traditional cocktails, such as with vodka and blue curacao in the Eighties Slammer or with cream sherry and Frangelico in Hazel Dreams.

Founded in 2015 by Jos Zonneveld, By the Dutch focuses on producing spirits that reflect the heritage of Holland. The company’s range also features Dry Gin, Old Genever, Batavia Arrack and three types of bitters.

By the Dutch Advocaat will be available to the on-trade through Astrum Wine Cellars from 15 January.

 

Snowball

Glass: Collins
Garnish: Lime twist
Method: Pour the lemonade and lime juice into an ice-filled glass, followed by the Advocaat. Lightly stir and garnish.

105ml lemonade
22.5ml fresh lime juice
60ml By the Dutch Advocaat

Eighties Slammer

Glass: Poco grande
Garnish: Sprinkles and orange twist
Method: Shake all ingredients with crushed ice. Pour into glass and garnish.

60ml By the Dutch Advocaat
30ml vodka
15ml blue curacao
20ml lime juice
20ml simple syrup

Hazel Dreams

Glass: Coupe or small wine glass
Garnish: Pine cone
Method: Stir all ingredients with ice. Strain into glass and garnish.

60ml By the Dutch Old Genever
30ml By the Dutch Advocaat
20ml cream sherry
5ml Frangelico Hazelnut Liqueur
