Liverpool’s H1780 Tap & Still set to open next month

This isn’t any old microbrewery, but rather a multimillion pound space with Caledonian Brewery’s former MD behind it.

H1780 Tap & Still is located in the totally transformed former site of Liverpool Craft Beer Company, a warehouse in Liverpool’s Baltic Triangle. The state of the art new brewery has a capacity of 9,000hl per year.

Higson’s has been produced since 1780 – hence the brewery’s name – but production ended in 1990. After Crawley was approached seven years ago, while still at Caledonian, about the beginnings of the brand’s revival, he acquired it, and simultaneously bought the Liverpool Craft Beer Company.

‘My thoughts were that every city needs a brewery. Most great cities have at least one and, what’s more, Higson’s was one of the first pints of beer I tasted,’ Crawley explained. ‘But my affection for the past didn’t compromise my advice. I stated that for it to succeed and for Liverpool to be proud of Higson’s again, the brand needed to be handled sympathetically.’

Crawley further drew on his experience at Caledonian for his vision of the new space. ‘Offering the opportunity for visitors to see the brewery and sample the product straight from the brewhouse is a special experience and made me want to offer that same opportunity to the people of Liverpool and those that visit the city,’ he added.

The first beer is expected to be brewed at H1708 in December, with tours and tastings starting in early 2018. The new beers will be made using new recipes, while the gin recipes for the new Ginsmiths of Liverpool brand will draw on Liverpool’s old trading routes for inspiration.
