One third of Brits have reduced their alcohol intake over the past year, according to new Mintel research showing the UK is becoming increasingly health conscious.
The analysts said this presents a significant opportunity for the trade to champion low-alcohol offerings and producers of beer, cider wines and spirits are aiming to capitalise with a raft of new product development.
One of the quirkier new offerings is a ‘low-alcohol aperitif’ called Bentianna, which comes all the way from Slovakia and is targeting the UK market.
The 13% abv drink combines a several varieties of honey, 13 different herbs – with gentian being the dominant one – and Slovakian Tokay wine that is aged in cask.
Bentianna is produced by Taste Evolution and is hailed as a versatile drink that can be enjoyed chilled as an aperitif, or as an after-dinner drink. Apparently it was a roaring success in Spain, Austria, Germany and Singapore, and the producer feels the time is right to hit the UK market.
‘Lately low-alcohol liqueurs and cocktails have been gaining in popularity,’ Veronika Karlova, co-founder of UK importer Karla & Co. Spirits, told Imbibe. ‘There’s a revolution going on in drinks industry and Bentianna wants to be a part of it with its unique taste.’
The drink is said to work well with tonic or in a variety of cocktails. It is already available on the cocktail menu in places like Nightjar and Gong at the Shard and carries an RRP of £27 for a 70cl bottle. A UK launch party and masterclass is imminent.
