Masons Gin relaunches with bespoke bottles and cask-aged experiments

Yorkshire distiller Masons has undergone a relaunch, not long after acquiring a new, bigger site for its distillery.

The gin range’s new bespoke bottles, with the Yorkshire Rose embossed on its front, as well as featured on the bottle’s base, have been unveiled at a number of events around the country, including one at London’s Merchant House last night.

The events were also an opportunity to preview a pair of cask-aged ‘barrel blended’ experiments the distillery has been conducting with the help of the coopers at Theakstons. The first is the distillery’s original gin that’s spent time in a barrel formerly containing Theakston Old Peculier, while the second was aged in a former Theakston Barista Stout barrel.

The former has a freshness, as well as a touch of earthiness on the nose, leading to spicy, curry-like botanicals on the palate, and some appealing roundness from the oak – ideal for sipping neat. The Barista Stout barrel, on the other hand, has resulted in a gin with some serious peppery spice on the nose, leading to a softer palate with some vanilla upfront, and then some bitterness and clean citrus towards the finish – a combination that gives it some serious mixability. They’ll both be available for bars to experiment with soon.

The gin’s two stills, Steve and Leftie, are due to make their short journey to the new distillery – a former Mercedes service garage just up the road from the former facility – in the next week.

The distillery’s core range consists of the original Masons Dry Yorkshire Gin, with a botanical list that includes Szechuan pepper, bay leaves and more, as well as two variants on that original, namely Lavender and Yorkshire Tea. Keeping it local, the bespoke bottles have been produced by Allied Glass in Yorkshire. Masons was first launched on World Gin Day in 2013.
