The famously peaty Islay whisky Ardbeg has released a great vatted malt called Rollercoaster. The 57.3%abv whisky gets its name from the fluctuating stock profile which encompasses whiskies from 1997 to 2006.
On the nose we got fresh salty sea spray and more muggy oily notes, which opened out with water into soot, juniper wood smoke, lime and box-fresh trainers. On the palate, blackcurrant and cherries and damp wood fires with a little Asian-style spice.
Dr Bill Lumsden describes it as ‘a collision’ of two other Ardbegs: Corryvreckan and Blasda. Limited to 15,000 bottles, the whisky was launched amidst carnival-style celebrations to mark the 10th anniversary of the Ardbeg fanclub, known as the Ardbeg Committee.£50/70cl. MHUK, 020 7235 9411
