The Connaught’s Erik Lorincz will represent the UK at the Diageo World Class Global final in Greece this month after taking top spot in the UK finals on Tuesday.
The final took place over four rounds throughout the day, with a field of 13 competitors from around the country reduced to four semi-finalists, then two finalists.
Challenges included a mystery ingredient round, where bartenders were given ten minutes to examine a list of ingredients, and then a further ten to use these to produce a long and a short drink. In other rounds, competitors were tested on product knowledge, and each produced an apéritif and digestif of their own creation.
Up against Stephen Martin from Rick’s Bar in Edinburgh in the final, Lorincz ultimately triumphed with a drink that combined Tanqueray No.10, coriander, yuzu juice, and fino sherry, served alongside a dramatic botanical-and-dry-ice garnish.
Judges at the event, held at Millbank Tower in London, included John Torode and Gregg Wallace from Masterchef, as well as Andy Pearson.
