We’ve drunk our fair share of whisky aged in ex-rum casks, so when we heard about the launch from Havana Club – a rum aged in ex-whisky casks – we sat up and listened.
The third instalment in the series of annual releases paying tribute to Cuban rum’s diversity, Havana Club Tributo 2018 is the first premium rum to be finished in smoky whisky casks, according to the company.
Released at the Cigar Habanos Festival in Cuba this week, the new expression was part finished in casks that previously held smoky whiskies and were hand-selected by Asbel Morales, Havana Club’s rum master.
While we’re dreaming of getting our hands on it, we’ve been told it’s an exceptional rum with a subtle yet distinctive smoky note and a cascade of flavours produced by the combination of casks.
Much like other rums in the annual release, Havana Club Tributo 2018 honours the cask’s role in the rum production process, showcasing the complex taste that maturation in oak casks adds to the original sugarcane distillate. The rum is presented in a weighty white wooden box, with each bottle numbered and personalised with Morales’ signature.
‘This rare rum finished in smoky whisky casks is a manifestation of our proud Cuban heritage interpreted for modern rum drinkers,’ said Morales. ‘We proudly present Havana Club Tributo 2018, a true Cuban rum with a unique taste that pays homage to the influence of the cask in the different varieties and styles of Cuban rum.
‘The Tributo 2018 edition is a testament to the craftsmanship at Havana Club distillery, and we celebrate the expertise and passion of everyone who carefully monitored every stage of the distillation, maturation and blending process’.
If, like us, you want a bottle for your own backbar, you’ll have to be quick as only 2,500 will be released globally.
