Hawksmoor’s Alan Cartolano took first place in the Olmeca Margarita Competition in London yesterday, earning himself a trip to Mexico.

Hosted by the Tahona Society, the competition requires competitors to create a variant on the Margarita using Olmeca Altos. His Compadrecita de Los Altos combined blanco tequila with lime juice and a home-made beer reduction, served in a small beer mug.

‘Compadre means friend in Spanish,’ said Cartolano. ‘This combines beer and tequila, which go together like bread and butter.’

His prize includes distillery visits, quad biking in agave fields, and a visit to the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT). He will then represent the UK in the Grand International Final of the Olmeca Margarita Contest in Mexico City.
