Thousands of bartenders from seventeen countries across six continents entered, but only one was victorious. Yeray Monforte of Spain’s Dr Stravinsky has won the 2018 Patrón Perfectionists cocktail competition, pipping five other international finalists to the post.
Held each year, the competition tasks entrants with the challenge of achieving as close to perfection as they can in their trade. The brief? Create a cocktail that reflects the holy trinity of Patrón Tequila: passion, precision and care.
60ml Patrón Silver tequila
*A mix of 25ml orange honey, 25ml lemon juice and 10ml olive oil
Having won the heats in their respective home countries, six bartenders (including Monforte) made it to the final round of the global competition, which took place on 24 January in Jalisco, Mexico. Those talented competitions were Óscar Olvera from Mexico, Makina Labrecque from Canada, Peter Hannah from the USA, Chloé Merz from Germany and Mitsuhiro Nakamura from Japan. Representing the UK at the international competition was Nicole Sykes from Satan’s Whiskers.
Monforte snagged the title with a serve called Wind – mix of Patrón Silver, an ‘eternal youth mixture’ (honey, lemon juice and olive oil), egg white, fino sherry and a spray of Patrón Reposado macerated in bee pollen, garnished with fresh thyme and a strip of beeswax.
‘The calibre of the cocktails entered… is a testament to the talent within the global community,’ commented Patrón. ‘We’re very proud of Yeray [Monforte] for an outstanding win with his cocktail Wind. We’re now looking forward to seeing where he will go next as the 2018 Global Patrón Perfectionists cocktail competition winner.’
