Belfast triumphs in World Cup


Team Belfast took top honours in the 42 Below Cocktail World Cup 2010 national final at Shoreditch House on 15th February.

The winning team (picture), consisting of Hayden Scott Lambert and Lisa McCarron from The Merchant Hotel, will go on to represent the UK in New Zealand next month. Runners up, Team West London (James Wynn-William of Trailer Happiness and Stuart Fritz and Danny Winter from Lab), will also join them in NZ.

The results were announced by Raymond Blanc, who plans to open his first cocktail/wine bar this year with the 2008 winner of the Cocktail World Cup in NZ and winner of The Restaurant series 3, JJ Goodman. Blanc said: ‘It was an honour to be part of such a wonderful competition with so much energy and talent’. The judging panel included other leading industry figures such as Peter Dorelli, who was equally smitten with everyone’s efforts, saying: ‘So much talent, so many great drinks. I have never seen bartenders put so much imagination and dedication into their performances.’

Team Belfast’s Catch 42 was the winning cocktail, its USP being that it was transparent in spite of being made from tomato extract and passionfruit puree. Team West London’s contribution, Pacific Dawn, took the judges on a historical journey of ingredients from commonwealth colonies.

The international competition, which puts bartenders on the world stage in 13 countries, saw 30 of the UK’s best bartenders shake it out for the title.

50ml 42 Below Pure Vodka
30ml clarified tomato juice
17.5ml clarified passion fruit puree
15ml clarified lime juice
10ml sugar syrup
pinch of salt
Stir and strain into a martini glass and garnish with a cherry tomato.

Pacific Dawn
Team West London
50ml 42 Below Manuka Honey Vodka
25ml vanilla tobacco infused Naval Rum
25ml cardamom infused treacle syrup
1tbs Kenyan coffee beans
4 drops liquorice bitters
Serve at 42degrees centigrade in a silver goblet with a scurvy ration of 42BELOW Kiwifruit lime wedges.
