Glenmorangie releases Grand Vintage 1989

Location: Scotland

Adding to its vintage collection, Glenmorangie has released a 27-year old spirit from the final days of its former still house, named Glenmorgangie Grand Vintage Malt 1989.

The first Glenmorangie to be part-matured in ex-Côte Rôtie casks, the whisky is the second limited release in the distillery’s Bond House No.1 vintage collection, which explores some of its Highland distillery’s most prestigious parcels of aged whisky

Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1989 is some of the last spirit ever to emerge from the distillery’s former still house, which was home to Scotland’s tallest stills for more than a century. After the liquid’s distillation, the company’s signature stills were removed from the still house.

Sadly, this was a sample we didn’t receive, but no doubt its description as a rich and complex single malt whisky are correct. According to Dr Bill Lumsden, Glenmorangie’s director of distilling, the liquid has smoky and sweet aromas and is peppery on the palate, with glorious, full tastes of baked apples and buttery fudge, leading to a long and powerful finish brimming with honey, notes of leather and classic wood spices.

Lumsden arranged for these parcels of 1989 spirit to be finished in rare casks, the most rare being ex-Côte Rôtie. Just before maximum ageing, Lumsden blended the spirits to form a soft, oaky single malt with hints of ripe red fruits.

‘After 27 years of patient maturation, I knew that Glenmorangie Grand Vintage Malt 1989 was ready to share,’ said Lumsden. ‘Each cask in the assemblage had been carefully chosen to complement the exquisite depths brought to the whisky by the parcel finished in ex-Côte Rôtie casks.  The resulting expression beautifully balances the subtle finesse of Glenmorangie’s spirit with a rare richness and intensity.’

For Grand Vintage 1989, the distillery is focusing on supplying to high-end on-trade accounts, so sadly, not everyone will get to taste or serve this precious liquid. A limited amount of bottles are available, however, the final number has not been disclosed.
