Imbibe rounds up the latest whiskies to hit the UK market

Uncle Nearest Distillery, Nathan Green 1870

Tennessee whiskey brand Uncle Nearest has enjoyed a warm welcome in the UK since its launch earlier this year, and chose to unveil its first ever single barrel whiskey on our shores before anywhere else.

The distillery, which takes its inspiration from the story of the first known African-American master distiller Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green, teamed up with the British Bourbon Society for this release.

The special release Nathan Green 1870 shows notes of hay, pumpkin seeds, stone fruits and caramel on the nose. On the palate, it is mellow and caramelly, with flavours of dried fruits and blossoms, before a spicy finish.

58% abv; RRP £70/75cl bottle, Hills Prospect, 01708 335050; Venus Wine & Spirit Merchants, 020 8801 0011; Chalié Richards, 07506 179 823

Proximo Spirits, The Sexton

Another new arrival, this time from Ireland, is Proximo Spirits’ Irish single malt The Sexton.

Made from 100% Irish malted barley, it is triple distilled in pot stills and aged in Oloroso sherry butts. The casks are first air-dried for 16 months, then highly toasted before being seasoned for two years with Oloroso sherry.

This process results in heavily roasted and dark chocolate aromas on the nose, with additional flavours of marzipan, winter spices and dried fruits on the palate.

40% abv, RRP £30/75cl, Proximo Spirits, 0207 4896410

East London Liquor Company, London Rye

Following a super successful crowdfunding campaign earlier in the year, East London Liquor Company has unveiled its first whisky, London Rye. The release joins a strong lineup of a wheat vodka, a demerara rum, and London dry, single batch and barrel-aged gins.

The whisky is first aged in French oak and bourbon barrels, then finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry butts.

London Rye Whisky has intense notes of toffee, tobacco, dark chocolate, ginger, stewed apple and a hint of smoke.

Glengoyne Distillery, Teapot Dram Batch #006

Teapot Dram Batch #006 is the latest single batch from Glengoyne Distillery and pays homage to Glengoyne workers, who until the 1970s enjoyed a thrice-daily dram that flowed from a bashed copper teapot in the distillery canteen.

Legend goes that the younger workers would discreetly pour their whisky into a copper teapot and leave it ready to be consumed by their older colleagues.

Glengoyne’s tribute is bursting with aromas of sweet treacle, digestive biscuits, cinnamon, marzipan and soft spices.

Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, Projects 004

Spirit of Yorkshire, the first Yorkshire-based malt whisky distillery, has launched the latest batch in its Maturing Malts series.

Dubbed Projects 004, it’s the fourth expression in the distillery’s collectibles series, described by Spirit of Yorkshire as being ‘elegant, fruity and aromatic with notes of salted caramel, crème brûlée, toffee apple, honey roasted nuts, orange sherbet and five spice’.

It comprises a 50/50 split between pot and column still spirits, aged in bourbon, wine and sherry casks.

46% abv, RRP £39.95/70cl, Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, 01723 891758
