Call to arms for Alsace wines by Roger Jones

Top chef Roger Jones has issued a stirring call to arms for the on-trade to get behind Alsace wines.

The twinkly-eyed Welshman is best-known for his love of New World wines, particularly Australia and South Africa, but a recent consumer food-matching dinner may have left him with a new European love.

‘It’s certainly a region that seems more popular with consumers than the trade or press, although I don’t understand why as these wines represent terrific value for money,’ Jones said.

For a second time this year, Harrow at Little Bedwyn hosted a ‘celebration of Alsace wines’ to shine a light on the diversity of the region and enlighten 70 guests. The Harrow currently lists four Alsace wines by the glass on their main menu, as well as having ‘one of the best’ selections of Trimbach’s Clos Sainte Hune in the UK dating back to the 1970s.

Thirty wines were on show at the event this month, including Crémant d’Alsace, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Auxerrois, Riesling, Muscat, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir.
