Nothing says summer like a crisp white wine, particularly a German Riesling, and this summer over 250 restaurants, bars, and importers united for a summer devoted to Riesling. The end goal? Being crowned 31 Days of German Riesling Restaurant of the Year.
After a summer of campaigning, EatDrinkSleep at Cornwall’s The Felin Fach Griffin took home the title, winning for its set menus, strong sales results and tutored tasting sessions. Runner up was awarded to Bedales for a strong social media campaign and a Riesling and cheese tasting by an in-house expert.
Led by Wines of Germany, cities across the UK including Inverness, Edinburgh, London, Cardiff and Swansea all competed to win the title. The successful establishments have also won funds towards creating new German wine listings.
‘What was brilliant about this year, was the massive increase in digital and media activity from previous years,’ said Wines of Germany UK director Nicky Forrest. ‘The hashtag #31daysofgermanriesling reached over two and a half million consumers alone and of course we saw the usual flurry of podcasts and press coverage including a mention on Saturday Kitchen.
‘We are always looking to increase sales and were thrilled that the majority of participants saw sales at least double during the promotion. We were very happy with the results this year and the way that 31 Days of German Riesling has grown consistently, swept along by the enthusiasm of the trade and consumers alike.’
Thinking of taking part next year? Original ideas, diverse wine lists and social media reach are all taken into account in the judging process.
