Bartenders get your sherry cocktail recipes at the ready, as Tío Pepe Challenge 2018 opens for entries and widens the net to include 14 countries around the world.
From the UK to Australia, and China to the US, mixologists will compete to win a place in the contest’s grand final, held during the famous Feria de Jerez at the beginning of May.
A number of masterclasses and regional heats will take place over the course of the challenge, where bartenders can improve their knowledge of sherry, sharpen up their venencia – the traditional tool used to decant sherry from the barrel – skills, and learn more about the fortified wine’s cocktail potential.
To be in with a chance, entrants have to complete an online theory quiz and submit their cocktail ideas. Only the top 10 bartenders (with the best recipes from each country) will compete for a place in the final.
In May, the grand finalists will be tested on their sherry knowledge, use of a venencia, and ability to make ‘delicious and innovative’ sherry cocktails – all live, in front of a panel of international experts.
Joao Vicente from Alto Bar, Berlin was named the Tío Pepe Challenge 2017 winner.
