Luis Felipe Edwards has revealed ambitious plans to massively increase its vineyard holdings in Chile over the next ten years.

Currently the Chilean winery – still 100% family owned – has around 2,000 hectares of vineyards, but has told Imbibe that it plans to increase this to 3,000ha inside the next two years – and to 10,000ha  inside the next decade.

‘Because we’ve been the only people planting on any scale over the last ten years, our knowledge on land, planting and viticulture is as good as it gets,’ said LFE’s Commercial Director, Peter Greet. ‘We know what we are looking for it’s just a case of finding it.’

At the top of the wish-list are cooler sites closer to the ocean in areas like Maule and Colchagua Costa. The company planted 750 hectares in the latter three years ago and that fruit is due to come on stream in the next vintage.

While there will be some more unusual varieties such as Malbec and Albarino, the vast majority of the new plantings will be classic Chilean varieties like Cabernet, Merlot, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

‘Places like Champagne and Bordeaux only have a few varieties, and Chile can still improve at what it does already,’ said Greet.
